5 Tips To Protect Your Rights After a Car Accident

Published on Dec 14, 2018 at 10:32 am in Personal Injury.

Unfortunately, car accidents happen. When they do, the actions taken by those involved immediately following the accident play a very large role in the outcome. It is important for drivers and passengers to be informed and prepared in the event of an accident. They can protect themselves by following these five tips.

Tip 1: Remain at the scene of the accident

Always stay at the scene of the accident. Make sure that no one is seriously injured in the accident and if they are, call 911 immediately. If someone is injured and you leave the scene, you can be criminally charged. You will also need to exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver. Make sure to write down the names of any passengers involved as well. You should also gather information from any witnesses and speak with the police when they arrive on the scene.

Tip 2: Take photos

If possible, document as much as you can by taking photos. Take pictures of your vehicle and the other vehicle(s). If any permanent structures were involved in the accident, make sure to document these too. Take pictures of any injuries you or your passengers sustained. If any locals are around, find out if accidents frequently occur at that location. And if so, take photos of the scene as well.

Tip 3: Seek medical attention

Even if you do not feel that you are injured, it is always a good idea to get checked out by your doctor. Sometimes injuries resulting from a car accident do not show up immediately. And if you do not seek medical attention, when these injuries do eventually surface, you may not be able to seek compensation if they have not been documented. So, see your physician and make sure to keep track of any medical treatment.

Tip 4: Don’t admit fault

Regardless of the circumstances, it is never a good idea to admit fault at the scene of an accident. Accidents can happen so quickly. There may have been factors beyond your knowledge involved. It is always best to talk to witnesses, do your research and consult with an attorney before coming to a conclusion about the accident. There will be plenty of time to speak with the insurance agents about the accident after you and your attorney have discussed the case.

Tip 5: Hire a personal injury attorney

After an accident, it is best to consult with a knowledgeable attorney. If you were not at fault and you sustained injuries or other damages, a personal injury lawyer will help you to pursue full compensation.
